Where to Stay in the Dolomites for a Quieter Trip (Sesto, San Candido, Dobbiaco)
If you’re planning a trip to the Dolomites and want something a bit quieter, this is the area to look at.
Most first-time visitors focus on places like Ortisei, Corvara, or Cortina. They’re popular for a reason but they’re not the only option.
If you’re looking for fewer crowds, a slower pace, and a slightly different feel, the eastern Dolomites around Sesto, San Candido, and Dobbiaco are worth considering.
Who This Area Is For
This part of the Dolomites works especially well if you:
Prefer quieter towns over busy resort areas
Want a more relaxed pace
Still want access to iconic scenery
Are happy with fewer cable cars and less “built-up” infrastructure
It’s not about doing less. It’s about doing things differently.
What This Area Is Best For
This region gives you easy access to some of the most well-known landscapes in the Dolomites, including:
Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Lago di Braies
Lago di Misurina
Val Fiscalina (Fischleintal)
Cadini di Misurina viewpoints
Many of these can be experienced with short walks or simple access points.

What It’s Like to Stay Here
Sesto, San Candido, and Dobbiaco feel different from the more central Dolomites.
Quieter, more local atmosphere
Less crowded in the evenings
Fewer large hotels and busy town centers
More space and a slower pace overall
A lot of people find this more relaxing, especially after a day out exploring.
The Trade-Offs (Important)
This is where people get it wrong if they don’t think it through.
Compared to Ortisei or Corvara:
Fewer cable cars
Less variety of lift-accessed viewpoints
More driving between locations
Not as central if you want to see multiple regions
This area works best if you’re focused on the Three Peaks region, not trying to cover everything.
If your goal is variety and easy lift access, you’re usually better off in Ortisei or Corvara.
Sesto vs San Candido vs Dobbiaco
Quick breakdown:
Sesto
Closest to Val Fiscalina and Tre Cime access
Best if you want to be right in the mountains
San Candido
Slightly larger town with more shops and restaurants
Good balance of access and atmosphere
Dobbiaco
More practical base
Good location between Cortina and the Three Peaks area
You don’t need to overthink this, they’re all close to each other and work similarly.
When to Choose This Area Over Ortisei or Corvara
Choose Sesto / San Candido / Dobbiaco if:
You want a quieter, less crowded experience
You’re focused on Tre Cime and nearby areas
You’re okay driving to your main viewpoints
