Quieter Bases (Sesto, San Candido, Dobbiaco)
Most first-time visitors focus on Ortisei, Corvara, or Cortina. They are popular for a reason. But they are not the only option, and they are not right for everyone.
If you want fewer crowds, a slower pace, and a slightly different feel, the eastern Dolomites around Sesto, San Candido, and Dobbiaco are worth a serious look.
Who this area is for
This part of the Dolomites works well if you prefer quieter towns over busy resort areas, want a more relaxed pace, and are happy with fewer cable cars and less built-up infrastructure. It is not about doing less. It is about doing things differently.
What you can see from here
The scenery in this area is some of the most iconic in the entire region. Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Lago di Braies, Lago di Misurina, Val Fiscalina, and the Cadini di Misurina viewpoints are all accessible from this base, most of them with short walks or simple road access. If those specific places are your priority, this area is an excellent choice.

What it feels like to stay here
Sesto, San Candido, and Dobbiaco feel noticeably different from the more central Dolomites. The evenings are quieter, the towns are less crowded, and the overall pace is slower. There are fewer large hotels and busy town centres. A lot of people find this more relaxing, especially if they have been travelling for a while or want the trip to feel like a genuine rest rather than a schedule to get through.
The trade-offs
This is where people get it wrong if they do not think it through. Compared to Ortisei or Corvara, there are fewer cable cars, less variety in lift-accessed viewpoints, and more driving between locations. This area works best if you are focused on the Three Peaks region, not trying to cover the whole Dolomites. If you want variety and easy lift access every day, you are usually better off based further west.
Sesto, San Candido, or Dobbiaco?
Sesto is the closest to Val Fiscalina and the Tre Cime access road, which makes it the best choice if you want to feel right in the mountains. San Candido is slightly larger with more restaurants and shops, offering a good balance of access and atmosphere. Dobbiaco is the most practical of the three, sitting between Cortina and the Three Peaks area, which makes it useful if you want to reach both directions easily.
They are all close to each other, so you do not need to overthink the difference.
When to choose this area over Ortisei or Corvara
This eastern base makes sense if you want a quieter experience, your main focus is Tre Cime and nearby areas, and you are comfortable driving to your main viewpoints each day. Ortisei or Corvara make more sense if you want easy cable car access, more variety without driving, or the simplest possible setup for a first trip.
