Best Dolomites Bases for Non-Hikers (Where to Stay in the Dolomites Without Hiking)

Best Dolomites Bases for Non-Hikers

If you’re planning a trip to the Dolomites but don’t want long hikes, choosing the right base town makes all the difference.

Many people assume the Dolomites are only for serious hikers. But one of the things that surprises most visitors is how accessible the scenery actually is. Cable cars, scenic mountain passes, and short panoramic walks make it possible to experience the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites without committing to long hikes.

Some towns give you much easier access to views, cable cars, and scenic drives than others.

These are some of the best places to stay in the Dolomites if you want incredible scenery without long hikes.

Ortisei (Val Gardena)

Ortisei is one of the easiest and most beautiful bases in the Dolomites.

From the center of town you can take cable cars directly up to Seceda and Alpe di Siusi, two of the most spectacular landscapes in the region. Both areas offer panoramic views and gentle walking paths rather than difficult hikes.

Ortisei also has a charming alpine village atmosphere with cafés, restaurants, and shops, making it a pleasant place to spend time in the evenings.

It’s one of the best places in the Dolomites if you want dramatic scenery with minimal effort.

Corvara (Alta Badia)

Corvara is another excellent base, especially for travelers who enjoy scenic drives, mountain restaurants, and wide open views.

The town sits in the heart of Alta Badia and is surrounded by famous mountain passes like Gardena Pass and Valparola Pass, which offer incredible viewpoints directly from the road.

Cable cars from Corvara also provide access to the Sella Group and the Pralongià plateau, where you’ll find panoramic walking paths and spectacular mountain scenery.

Alta Badia is also known for its food, with many excellent mountain huts and restaurants.

Cortina d’Ampezzo

Cortina is one of the most famous towns in the Dolomites and offers some of the most dramatic scenery in the region.

From Cortina you can easily visit places like:

• Cinque Torri
• Lago di Braies
• Passo Giau
• Tre Cime viewpoints

Many of these locations can be reached with short walks or cable car access, making Cortina a great base for travelers who want iconic Dolomites landscapes without long hikes.

The town itself also has a lively atmosphere with restaurants, cafés, and shops.

Sesto / San Candido (Three Peaks Area)

Sesto and nearby San Candido are excellent bases for exploring the Three Peaks (Tre Cime) region, one of the most famous landscapes in the Dolomites.

From here you can easily visit several iconic places:

• Tre Cime viewpoints
• Lago di Braies
• Val Fiscalina (Fischleintal)
• Lago di Misurina
• Cadini di Misurina viewpoints

While this area is very popular with hikers, there are also beautiful valley walks and easy-access viewpoints that make it enjoyable even if you’re not planning long hikes.

The towns themselves are quieter and more traditional than places like Cortina, which many travelers find relaxing after a day exploring the mountains.

Alpe di Siusi Area

The Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) plateau is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Dolomites.

Wide alpine meadows stretch beneath dramatic peaks like the Sassolungo, and many of the paths across the plateau are gentle walking routes rather than steep hikes.

Visitors can reach the area by cable car from Ortisei or by driving to Compatsch during permitted hours.

If you’re looking for peaceful scenery, alpine huts, and easy walks with incredible views, this is one of the most relaxing places in the Dolomites.

Choosing the Right Dolomites Base

Each of these towns offers a slightly different experience.

Ortisei – best for cable cars and iconic views
Corvara – great for scenic drives and food
Cortina – dramatic landscapes and famous landmarks
Sesto / San Candido – ideal for exploring the Three Peaks region
Alpe di Siusi area – peaceful scenery and gentle walking paths
